KHEAA Head Receives State GEAR UP Award - Cunningham Named Advocate of the Year

WASHINGTON, D.C., (March 16, 2010) – The Education Finance Council is pleased to announce that EFC Vice Chairman Edward J. Cunningham, Executive Director/CEO of the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) and The Student Loan People, has received the Kentucky GEAR UP Advocate of the Year award. Both organizations are public, nonprofit agencies that administer Kentucky’s grant, scholarship, Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL), and outreach programs to assist Kentuckians pursuing a postsecondary education.

“Because we share a common mission to make higher education more accessible to Kentuckians, I am certainly honored to be named a GEAR UP Advocate of the Year,” Cunningham said. “I share this recognition with the dedicated staff of KHEAA and The Student Loan People who give their best, day in and day out, to provide top-quality higher education programs and services to Kentuckians. For many years, we have reinvested our revenues into programs that promote higher education opportunities for Kentuckians. Our partnership with GEAR UP is one of which we are very proud and hope to continue in the years to come”

GEAR UP – the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs – is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and is designed to better prepare middle and high school students to enter and succeed in college. KHEAA has partnered with GEAR UP since 2000 when the first grant was awarded to Kentucky.

EFC President Peter Warren said, “This award is a great tribute to the hard work that Ed and his staff do every day to help Kentuckians achieve their dream of a postsecondary education. GEAR UP is just one example of the many aid programs, along with valuable outreach services, that EFC members administer and provide to students and families in their states.”
