EFC Statement on the Passing of Senator Edward Kennedy
“The passing of Senator Kennedy is a great loss to Congress and the Nation. During his 47 year tenure in the U.S. Senate, he was a dedicated and vocal advocate for higher education opportunity. He worked tirelessly to ensure that American youth could afford to attend college by influencing the development of the Higher Education Act through a series of reauthorizations, in consistently championing the importance of Pell Grants, and in being a driving force behind an array of student-aid related legislation, such as the law creating the Americorps program.”
“EFC members, including the mission-oriented nonprofit student loan providers based in states all around the Nation, share Senator Kennedy’s dedication to maintaining and enhancing college access and opportunity. On their behalf, EFC extends deepest condolences to the Senator’s wife and family during this difficult time.”
